The title of the film is derived from the name of Zanjir which was used to tighten ropes during an execution. The film was shot in Mumbai, Chennai and Punjab. Reports emerged that the movie was based on the 1993- Bombay bombings case, but Jha denied this stating that the movie wasn't made on it. On 6 October 2012, Priyanka Chopra said that she would be starring with Sanjay Dutt in Prakash Jha's new film. On 16 October 2012, Amitabh Bachchan confirmed his presence in the film by sending a note to journalists which read "Chalta hai life meri--Amitabh". Priyanka Chopra will play a Gujrati girl from Mumbai , who falls for an encounter cop from Amritsar named Jeet (Sanjay Dutt). The movie is an action movie with romance. Sanjay Dutt's character, Jeet Ram gets seduced by mafia don Kancha (Amitabh Bachchan) and he has to choose between his love and duty. Jeet falls in love with a Gujrati girl from Mumbai who's the daughter of his enemy. Amitabh plays a big mafia don in the film. The film's first look was released on the same day as that of "Jab Tak Hai Jaan". The first look of the film showed Sanjay Dutt and Priyanka Chopra kissing. Amitabh Bachchan released his first look on 8 November 2012. It depicts him smoking a cigarette with blue eyes. Prakash Jha confirmed that there would be an action sequence in the film, which would have been choreographed by Dilip Ghosh since Chopra is a trained dancer. He also said that there will be no love scenes between Sanjay Dutt and his co-star, due to Chopra being too young to appear with Dutt in such scenes. The film's soundtrack and score were composed and produced by Himesh Reshammiya. The lyrics for the track "Tere Bina Nahi Aya" were penned by Amitabh Bachchan, while the other two tracks were written by Piyush Mishra. "Zanjeer"'s premiere was held at Jio MAMI, Mumbai on 11 September 2013. The film released on 12 October 2013. Reports surfaced later that the trailers displayed scenes from Chopra's other projects such as "Krrish 3".
